The packaging design lead/architect leads the design & engineering activities for our IPL product category throughout the entire project lifecycle from start to end. The initiation of a project includes proposing the best high-level packaging solution aligned with our packaging platform and requirements, including medical specifications in cooperation with the marketing team and the project system architect. After setting the project’s direction, the role also encompasses the design and development of the packaging. This includes working together with the stakeholders within and beyond the project team (PIE, QPL, T&V, ICE, etc.), as well as collaborating with suppliers, and markets/sales organizations to bring the product to the market. Moreover, the existing portfolio is managed (MLD projects) and gaps and opportunities are identified, and improvements implemented to bring the Structural Packaging group to a higher level.
You are responsible for:
Project management
Managing packaging development from ideation and concept decision, to packaging execution & release, industrialization in accordance with stakeholders.
Influence and work together with a multi-disciplinary team of packaging engineers and designers within the projects.
Manage packaging roadmap for the category, taking future requirements and ambitions into account.
Packaging development
Design & develop packaging solutions fit with functional, business, and medical requirements, including release plan, testing, and improving to reach the right quality for launch.
Documentation of all the development steps, including requirements & verification, BOM list, specifications, etc.
Packaging design:
Designing, detailing out and releasing new structural packaging concepts for IPL category from design to production, using the latest trends, materials, finishing and technologies with a consumer and sustainability focused approach.
Creating design briefs for external design suppliers.
Working closely together with communication designers, suppliers, engineers, and marketing manager and informing your stakeholders in an effective way.
Manage product requirements, lead DFMEA’s and follow the V-model methodology.
Release packs, parts, and modules for mass production,
Lead ideation sessions, drive concept creation and decision making.
Proof that your construction fulfills the function(s) and requirements under all load cases (via e.g. calculation, simulation, tolerance analysis, proto’s + testing).
Detail 3D and 2D files, and specifications incorporating Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly requirements and archiving in C PLM system (Windchill).
Plan and prioritize your own work and manage the interfaces with other product/ modules/ parts – able to work via agile approach.
Identify gaps and implement improvements to bring the Structural Packaging group to a higher level.
Capture and re-use of existing knowledge and share learnings.
Document your choices and proof in a Design History File (evidence document).

Structural packaging (lead) designers are part of the packaging design department, which is part of R&D engineering. The packaging designer is a crucial member in the integral process of product design & development at Philips. With a team of designers and engineers we develop packs for the Grooming & Beauty category.
To succeed in this role
Below, the competences and skills we are looking for:
Bachelor or Master in Design (or) Engineering.
fluent English in speech & writing.
Design capabilities: sketching, design principles & tools.
3D CAD experience, preferably NX.
Artios CAD & CAPE experience is preferred.
Basic knowledge of packaging materials and designing for those materials, like pulp, carton and paper & the properties of the different types of paper materials.
Basic knowledge of printing techniques and processes.
Basic knowledge on transport & logistics.
Experience with data management in Windchill is a plus.
Pro-active, focus on detail & quality.
Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
Able to lead and show ownership.
Preferably some knowledge on developing medical grade products.
willing to travel to Eindhoven one day a week or 2 days per 2 wks.
