Do I have to be registered at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce to be able to work on projects for Philips?

All businesses and legal entities in the Netherlands are required to register at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce Commercial Register (Handelsregister). According to the law, you operate a business if you independently supply goods or services to other parties in order to make a profit.

Freelancers, known in the Netherlands as ZZP'ers (zelfstandige zonder personeel or "independent with no staff") are obligated to register at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.

What is a business liability insurance? Do I need to have it to be able to work on projects for Philips?

As a self-employed person you run various risks with regard to liability. If you cause damage to people, property or other people's property during work, your company (in case of self-employment, you yourself ) may be liable for the consequences.

Business liability insurance (in Dutch “bedrijfsaansprakelijkheidsverzekering”) is an insurance against damage that you may incur during work.

For Philips additional requirements for the business liability insurance are that it should cover EUR 1.500.000 per event and EUR 2.500.000 per year.

If you are willing to apply for a project on the Philips Freelance Platform and currently do not have a liability insurance but inclined to get it in case of successful hiring, please reach out to supportteam@talent-pool.com.

What is VAT identification number? Why should I have it?

VAT identification number is a value added tax identification number. This unique number identifies a taxable person (business) or non-taxable legal entity that is registered for VAT.

Freelancers/self-employed professionals are almost always considered entrepreneurs for the purposes of turnover tax, which means that they must charge and pay VAT on their income.

Businesses registered with the Dutch Commercial Register at the Chamber of Commerce, are issued with a VAT-number, so they don’t have to register with the Dutch Tax Administration separately.

Example of VAT identification number: NL123456789B01
