Senior Dry Etching Process Engineer (Contract)


Location: Best

Duration Assignment: 12 months (with possible extension)

Contract: via a Randstad company

Hours/week: 40

Budget range: €3.836 - 6.000 per month

In this role, you challenge active members of the dry etching engineering cluster; Developing dry etching processes for internal and external customers; Interact with Project Managers, Sales, Product Engineers, other process engineers and Operators/Technicians.

You will be responsible for: 

  • Are responsible for the application and development of (new) dry etching processes, mostly within the context of a project.

    • Silicon Etching: Used to create microstructures in MEMS, or to create trenches and vias in integrated circuits.

    • Metal Etching: Used for wiring and contact structures in integrated circuits, often involving aluminum, copper, titanium, or tungsten etching.

    • Dielectric Etching: Removes insulating layers, such as silicon dioxide or silicon nitride, in semiconductor device fabrication.

    • Hard Mask Etching: Often required in pattern transfer steps where a hard mask (like silicon nitride) is first etched to serve as a template for further etching of underlying materials.

  • Have ownership of (almost) all dry etching equipment in the cleanroom, meaning maintaining the processes at a good and stable level.

  • Participate in projects realising the agreed deliverables; either contributes to or makes relevant technological choices inside the field of dry etching, during the different stages of the project. Use appropriate methods and tools for engineering activities.

  • Assist customers in consulting them for etching process choices. See opportunities for improvements and initiate these opportunities, within his own technological expertise/competency.

  • Judge the possibilities of reusing existing knowledge and the needs for new developments within the cluster. Continuously develop your technological knowledge, by regularly contacts in and outside the department, and also outside MMD and also with representatives from suppliers and knowledge institutes. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams for purchasing new equipment; contribute by designing the process requirements/ specifications and process acceptance protocols. Coach engineers and technicians. Proactively communicate with all stakeholders, including clients, senior management, professional network and colleagues.

  • Comply with the ESH policy, rules and regulations.


To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience:

You will need a customer-first attitude and the following 

  • A Master or Bachelor degree in the area of the exact sciences.

  • Experience in process engineering & development.

  • Experience in working with or leading project teams in technological area. In-depth knowledge of dry etching technology used for thin film processing.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, both technical as interpersonal.

  • Capable of combining physical and chemical knowledge in order to understand the complex plasma etch processes and their interaction with thin films.

  • Knowledge of fundamental tools (DOE, SPC, FMEA,

  • Problem Solving, Teamwork, etc.), required in an engineering environment.

  • Has a pragmatic, creative, flexible attitude with a result driven can-do mentality.

  • Excellent communication skills, professional level of written and verbal communication in English.,
