Senior Chemical/Mechanical Scientist

RunWell is an innovative maritime fouling prevention technology, developed by Philips and its partners, with a mission to decrease the environmental impact of the shipping industry by the application of sustainable anti-fouling solutions. As a Senior, self-directed Chemical/Mechanical Scientist, you will play a key role in the development of advanced systems, leveraging your deep expertise in silicone chemistry and material composition to enhance our UV-C emitting anti-fouling and drag-reduction technologies. This is a crucial, hands-on role where you will be expected to provide specific, high-level knowledge not currently present in the team. Your contributions will have real-world impact delivering tremendous fuel savings in the shipping industry, and you will help to position RunWell technology as a global frontrunner in maritime decarbonization. The initial contract for this project-based role is up to 2 years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Based on your deep chemical expertise (specifically in silicones), further develop our UV-C anti-fouling technology by designing and optimizing material compositions and mechanical forming for flexible product structures.

  • Act as a bridge-builder between material chemistry and mechanical design to create complex product shapes suitable for exterior marine application.

  • Proactively identify problems and solutions within the scope of the project, embodying a self-starting, 'start-up mentality' rather than executing known procedures.

  • Translate research outcomes into tangible prototypes and cost-effective commercial solutions.

  • Engage heavily in hands-on experimentation and validation in the chemical lab (approx. 1/3rd of time) and participate in field installations ('feet in the dirt').

  • Contribute to IP creation by the documentation and protection of new ideas, and provide input to product road mapping.

  • Maintain a collaborative, safe, and supportive work environment, embracing teamwork across disciplines (part of a cross-company team, including Philips experts).

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Successful development of next-generation RunWell product solutions from a concept involving specific material combinations to a cost-effective commercial product.

  • Generation of innovative ideas and insights that require the application of specific, high-level knowledge to overcome current technical challenges.

  • Creation and submission of invention disclosures with potential IP relevance.

  • Timely and impactful transfer of innovations to product and engineering teams.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor/Master in Material Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.

  • More than 10 years of experience in product development related to the chemical composition and mechanical properties of Silicones and their interaction with other materials

  • Proven track record in translating existing chemical materials (e.g., plastics/polymers) into a finished product, rather than solely developing the base chemical substances

  • Expert knowledge of how chemical substances behave, combined with a strong understanding of mechanical design and strength requirements for flexible products.

  • Demonstrated experience in a hands-on role involving wet and dry lab experience and prototyping.
